As requested by Eric, and for the reference of the other new HKSA members, here are some tips on Housings in Eugene. Roughly speaking, there are usually 5 ways for u to stay in Eugene.
st, Living in Dorm; 2nd, Renting an Apartment; 3rd, Renting a Quart (Quad); 4th, Renting a House and 5th, Staying in Hotel/Motel.
st, Dorm. Basically, there should be some applications that u can fill out for the UO Student Dormitories while applying UO. It is the most convenient and best way for you to stay in Eugene for your freshman year. The advantage for staying in dorm is that u don't have to deal with all the renting procedures while u are finding problems coping with new environment here. Besides, u will never have to worry about food, bills, internet, phone, ways of knowing new friends and transportation while u r living in dorm.
nd, Apartment. Renting an apartment is not really that hard if you already know which building u want to move into exactly. Apartments that have 0-2 bedrooms are available (roughly priced from $400-$800). But I guess, nice ones are all reserved at this point, it will take some time to look for a "good deal". You will be expecting 2 ways to rent an apartment: with 1-yr Contract or w/o Contract. The contract binds u with the apartment which means u have to stay in the apt for the year no matter what happens. Furished (with furniture) apartments are also avaliable but the rent would be higher as u are also renting the furniture. You also have to expect to deal with electricity bill, phone bill, internet, cable tv... etc on your own.
rd, Quad. Pretty the same as apartments, but u only living in a room (no bedroom, yes bathroom) that have to share a kitchen with 3 other tenants. That why it is called a Quad. Rent is cheaper because the room u are living is smaller as compared to an apartment and quarts are uaually unfurished. Tenants pay electricity, phone, internet and cable tv.
th, a House. It is always not the choice for freshman and international students. It is much complicated than renting apartments 'coz u have to get more ppl to live together which means there are more problems u have to deal with. I have never tried to rent a house 'coz i don't want to live on ground floor in Eugene much.
th, Hotel/Motel. It should be the most convenient way for u to stay in Eugene in the 1st day or 2 if you do not have a dorm room or apartment to get urself sheltered at night. Some Motels are very close to campus and are affordable. I wish it can help. If you have more suggestions, plz feel free to add here.
